A mix from the notorious gay n.y.c. club The Anvil

The notorious club The Anvil opened in 1974 at 500 West 14th street in the currently oh so trendy meatpacking district.  Back then it was truly the definition of seedy.  There was a real free-for-all attitude in the club.  Gay men danced in their jock-straps and the smell of poppers and ethyl nitrate were in the air.  Felipe Rose of the Village People was discovered dancing here in a full American Indian garb with headdress.  Bobby "DJ" Guttardo was one of the d.j.'s that went on to have the most success.  His name seems to be on hundreds of my disco 12 inch releases as the remixer.
THE MIX
DUSEBERG ON AIDS the poppers story

On the bottom floor ground level of a landmark hotel called The Strand, I remember standing outside one morning with my friend George.  We were too intimidated to go in.  It seemed real hardcore to us and our suburban mindset.  Freddie Mercury was a regular, guess he had no problems with the atmosphere.

Declaration of Robert J. Cipriani includes passages about The Anvil

This mix is from 1983 by a DJ called David Antony at a party called So Many Men.  It's a great piece of history.  A mix that features all sorts of dance sounds from right after the term "disco" had fallen out of favor.  Some seem to forget that clubs like The Anvil were also a serious dance party and not only a sleazy dive.

The downstairs part of the club was like a huge back-room with dark passageways.  The club closed it's doors in 1986 just as New York was at the peak of the A.I.D.S. outbreak and many of the most popular establishments like the St. Marks Baths had to close their doors.  They became too synonymous with the outbreak.  Even some activists pointed their fingers at clubs like The Anvil and The Mineshaft.  And so a real after hours institution went by the wayside and remains only a memory for it's many punters.  Men who also frequented The Saint and Fire Island and the whole N.Y.C. gay leather scene of the time.  A N.Y. Times article from 1985 about the new climate of caution

It's now the 28 room hotel The Liberty Inn.  The Liberty Inn Sex Hotel A hotel with hourly rates.

The second album by U.K. new wave legends Visage was named after the club.  The Anvil was the last Visage project that featured Midge Ure.

Breakwater, more than just No Limit

THE BREAKWATER WEBSITE

It's about time I paid homage to Breakwater.  Formed in 1971 in Philadelphia;  they have been consistently been the most played artist in my iTunes.  They are the perfect soulful disco act that has not been overexposed.  Basically they never really had a hit.  I have a feeling that they were more re-discovered then anything.  Those ebay collectors sure know how to make a record out, but it does go in phases.  What was once a huge seller that got super high bids may later become common and will sell for far less.  LISTEN TO BREAKWATER BY CLICKING HERE

Their debut 12 inch release, the white label promo double A side of No Limit and Do it til the fluid gets hot is highly collectible and fetches a pretty penny whenever it comes around.

ANOTHER LINK FOR THE ALBUM

This zip that I'm posting is lower quality then I usually post.  When I get around to it I'll post a better quality version and I might even expand the post to include their second l.p. too.  i don't listen to that one quite as much but it's also a solid release.

I'd rather jack then Fleetwood Mac Reynolds Girls

How freakin' camp is this?  Stock, Aitken and Waterman really stepped it up a notch with this one.  A sister act The Reynolds Girls took it all the way up to #8 in 1989.  The beat is like drilling something into your mind you hear it twice and you can hear it over and over in your mind for the rest of your life!  And those lyrics, how audacious, how over the top, how naughty.  What a scream.  LISTEN TO I'D RATHER JACK HERE

Apparently it was a tongue in cheek against the critics who didn't consider S,A and W talented and completely ignored them at the Brit Awards year after year.  They got a lot of criticism and many considered this record to be amazingly naff but come on they were only 18 and 16 years old.

Touch by Secession simply a New Wave masterpiece

Simply a Synth-Pop new wave masterpiece.  Produced by the likes of the brilliant John Rocca from Freez. The Scottish group had a string of dance hits in a short period from 1983 to 1987.  They released only one about called A Dark Enchantment in late 1987. TOUCH ZIP

There is actually even another version with the female handling the leads.  But I prefer the guy.  In my zip I've got four versions including the super long Hot Tracks edit.

Touch (Part 3)

Spend my life without your touch, I cannot satisfy

All my dreams
Simple as can be
Just to see us
Walking side by side
It won't be easy
But even I can see
If we're to survive
We'll have to compromise our pride
I really need your touch
I never hurt so much
I really miss your touch
Give your affection to me
I really need your touch
I never hurt so much
I really miss your touch
Give your affection to me
Spend my life without your touch, I cannot satisfy
I can tell
By the look in your eyes
That I'm wasting your time
Don't turn your back on me
Turn your back on me
What can I say
What can I do
To keep from losing you
I really need your touch
I never hurt so much
I really miss your touch
Give your affection to me
I really need your touch
I never hurt so much
I really miss your touch
Give your affection to me
I really need your touch
I never hurt so much
I really miss your touch
Give your affection to me
I really need your touch
I never hurt so much
I really miss your touch
Give your affection to me
Spend my life without your touch, I cannot satisfy
