A LITTLE BIT OF JAZZ TONIGHT MAKES ME FEEL ALRIGHT

This blog is being re-posted.  Originally it ran in 2010 but now I have a zip with even more mixes in it.

I hate speaking in absolutes but A Little Bit of Jazz by the Nick Straker Band is quite frankly my favorite disco song of all time. It spent one week at #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play Chart in 1981.

THE ZIP OF THE JAZZ

My friend Jimmy M, a DJ based out of Arizona even created an edit for me for my birthday a couple years ago. Since I'm a Gemini and it's almost my special day again I thought I'd bring it out for you all to enjoy. He definitely played up some of the sound effects that I love so much in this song. Give me rocket ships, cowbells and whistles in my disco and you've put a smile on my face!
Another edit in the zip is by my friend Greg Womack.  He just left this earth late summer but I can assure you that he'd be thrilled to be included in this zip along with the fantastic Shep Pettibone Master Mix version.

I remember one time I was at The Loft in it's most recent home at the Ukranian Center on 2nd Avenue in the East Village and it came on. I was dancing and grooving and just feeling it and the next thing I knew I was crying. Tears of joy thank you very much. It just sounded so right, so delish. It wasn't the first time I've felt ecstasy on a dance-floor but it was one of the most powerful ones.

A Little Bit of Jazz was one of the fiercest Shep Pettibone Mastermixes made famous on the great series that New York Disco Radio Station WKYS (KISS) and Prelude records put out in 1982.  Check out my blog on Shep Pettibone.  Remember you can use the search function above to find out which things I've written about before.  If the links are dead feel free to ask me to refresh for you and if I can I will.

Please try to show appreciation for my blog.  Thanks much!

Once over 10 years ago I told Jimmy Michaels that A Little bit of Jazz was my favorite disco song.  So for my birthday he made me a mix.  I used to love dancing to this record at The Loft it was definitely a favorite of David Mancuso's.

So when I saw the Disco File Top 40 for the week it was #1 it made me think of the song.

While I was about to zip it up for you guys I realized I had a Greg Womack mix too.  Since we are honoring him four years after his passing I only felt appropriate to share it with you all.

A TASTE OF HONEY weren't one hit wonders

A Taste of Honey had a short blast of success.  It included the massive #1 pop hit debut single Boogie Oogie Oogie in 1978 and the lovely Japancentric ballad Sukiyaki a #3 hit in 1981 (both hitting #1 on the R&B charts).

The quirky thing about the grammy winning group was that they were all female, after 1980.  And these females played the instruments and wrote the songs.  You go girls!

The group's first single, "Boogie Oogie Oogie," was inspired by an unresponsive audience during a date at a military base; Johnson believed the crowd was chauvinistic toward the group's two female guitar players. The notorious bass solo intro came about when Johnson was warming up before the recording session, unaware that she was being recorded. The single sold more than two million copies and topped Billboard's charts for three weeks in fall 1978. The follow-up single, the slinky and funky "Do It Good," went to number 13 R&B and number 79 pop, and A Taste of Honey went platinum.

My favorite Taste of Honey song is Rescue Me from their third album in 1980.  It didn't chart in pop or disco but was a #16 R&B hit.  It's their most collectible maxi single since it was only available as a PROMO.  My late friend Greg Womack knew how much I loved it so he made me a great edit.  I'm including it in my Taste of Honey zip with a couple other songs.
