A LITTLE BIT OF JAZZ TONIGHT MAKES ME FEEL ALRIGHT

google.com, pub-9672253206618216, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0
This blog is being re-posted.  Originally it ran in 2010 but now I have a zip with even more mixes in it.

I hate speaking in absolutes but A Little Bit of Jazz by the Nick Straker Band is quite frankly my favorite disco song of all time. It spent one week at #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play Chart in 1981.
BONUS: STRAIGHT AHEAD
JIMMY M MIX
THE ZIP OF THE JAZZ

My friend Jimmy M, a DJ based out of Arizona even created an edit for me for my birthday a couple years ago. Since I'm a Gemini and it's almost my special day again I thought I'd bring it out for you all to enjoy. He definitely played up some of the sound effects that I love so much in this song. Give me rocket ships, cowbells and whistles in my disco and you've put a smile on my face!
Another edit in the zip is by my friend Greg Womack.  He just left this earth late summer but I can assure you that he'd be thrilled to be included in this zip along with the fantastic Shep Pettibone Master Mix version.

I remember one time I was at The Loft in it's most recent home at the Ukranian Center on 2nd Avenue in the East Village and it came on. I was dancing and grooving and just feeling it and the next thing I knew I was crying. Tears of joy thank you very much. It just sounded so right, so delish. It wasn't the first time I've felt ecstasy on a dance-floor but it was one of the most powerful ones.

A Little Bit of Jazz was one of the fiercest Shep Pettibone Mastermixes made famous on the great series that New York Disco Radio Station WKYS (KISS) and Prelude records put out in 1982.  Check out my blog on Shep Pettibone.  Remember you can use the search function above to find out which things I've written about before.  If the links are dead feel free to ask me to refresh for you and if I can I will.

Please try to show appreciation for my blog.  Thanks much!

A super early version of ambient music, a classic of Morning Music, Ozo's Anambra

The first place I heard this was at The Loft.  It blew me away.  It sounded so cool and it gave such a refreshing break to the evening.

Certain songs have become Morning Music classics.  It's hard to know why.  A few years ago I did a big run-down listing many of them and some opinions about the difference between sleaze and morning music.  But the links are mostly dead and I don't have the patience to compile them all again.

But I will give you this one in a zip.  It even includes a more recent edit, and the original from 1976.  I think you'll agree that this is a special record.  HOW ETHEREAL IS IT?

David Mancuso live at The Red Zone Italy

First of all I'd like to point out that the mp3 contained here is of a much lower quality then I would ordinarily share.  So if you're only consideration is high quality for possible use live then I suggest you don't download this.

So much has been written about David Mancuso and The Loft that I'm not going to bother to repeat much.  All you need to know is that Mancuso is disco legendary.  His parties preceded the disco era and were incredibly influential to the scene and the sound.  And even more exciting he has steadily spun from 1970 up to now.  You can still go to a Loft party, though they are only held 3 times a year in New York at this point.  And he does sometimes travel.

LOVE IS THE MESSAGE MFSB and VOGUING BALLS FOREVER

Nothing can really be said about this record without sounding banal. For voguers, ball children, Garageheads, Loftheads, Body and Soul fans and many d.j.'s and club punters along the way it's been an inspiration and the stimulus of much joy.
LOVE IS THE MESSAGE in .WAV
Originally a 45 rpm release in 1973 it seemed to simmer and boil throughout the years until exploding in the late 70's as an out and out disco classic. It's been re-pressed many times including in 1979 when MFSB shared the billing with The Three Degrees.

The Danny Krivit remix is the definitive one to have. Danny himself was right in the thick of it all too. He like David Mancuso came to prominence in the 70's and has continued to be active ever since. Often his projects are billed under aliases like Mr. K.

His version was included on the compilation to accompany the classic dance scene book Last Night a DJ Saved My Life which I blogged about a couple years ago here on Disco Vinyl.

If you click on the title of this blog it will bring you directly into my Ebay store where you can check out the huge amount of Paradise Garage classics I have for sale.

I LOVE IT, TRUSSEL MASTERPIECE

Trussel was a funk group from Petersburg, Virginia who had one l.p. release in 1980 on Elektra Records. It featured the infectious disco throw-down Love Injection. But the real prize on it was I Love It. A few years back it was included on the superb cd series Azuli Presents, this one featuring Derrick L. Carter, Choice: A Collection of Classics. Since re-discovering it, it has been consistently one of my most played tracks in iTunes.

It is simply just not your typical disco or funk tune. Not even a dollop of cheese on this one. It's a veritable house party in itself. The production work by Fred Wesley, who formerly had collaborated with the Ike and Tina Turner Review, James Brown and Funkadelic is adventurous and far from commercial sounding. Around this time Fred Wesley also came out with a major Loft classic with his own House Party 12" on RSO records. It was featured on Nuphonic records Loft Classics Volume 2 compilation. But back to I Love It cause hot damn I just love it so much!

It just has to be heard to be understood. Do help yourself to the download.

LISTEN TO TRUSSEL

The breaks are on fire on this track. In fact by about five and a half minutes in it turns into a full-stop jazz funk jam session. The lead singer starts a frenzied insane scat and then the hook just repeats over and over:
I Love It
I Love Only You
I Love It
And The Things That You Do
I Love It
I Love Only You
I Love It
And The Things That You Do....That You Do....That You Do...That You Do

Truly a disco funk jazz odyssey. This love mantra just keeps repeating until it fades out but by then you should love it too.

My Disco Auctions

I love Disco Music. It means the world to me. I remember buying my first 12" disks when I was 12 years old. I had to pretend that I didn't love disco as much as I did because where I grew up was quite provincial and everyone was into traditional rock like Led Zeppelin and Yes and The Rolling Stones.
I soon became an obsessive collector. I spent all of my allowance on records. When I got older I bought entire collections from other people, especially EX dj's. Once I got several hundred records that used to belong to Larry Levan. That was just after he died in 1992. It was an incredible find! Not too long ago I auctioned off one of those treasures. The test pressing of Ms. Sharon Ridley's Changin' HEAR IT. I understand that it was one of the definitive end of the night closing songs at The Paradise Garage. I never got to go to the King St. disco because when I was 18 I moved to D.C. to go to The American University. By the time I moved to N.Y. it had just closed.

I have been attending Loft parties for several years. I adore the Loft classics that David Mancuso plays and I am incredibly drawn to the energy at the party. Now that I'm older I also enjoy the idea of attending a party early. Loft parties are held at the tea dance time and go until about midnight. Take a look at the video below. David DePino, a Larry Levan disciple speaks about when The Loft first started in 1970.

My collecting skills and obsession with accumulating can now become your chance to add that "I've always wanted classic" to your collection. I have been selling my vinyl on Ebay, and have enjoyed my calling as a vinyl vendor. It's been a fun way to communicate with people from all over the world who have like interests.

Maybe you've bought from me before. I've still got a lot of great stuff and much more to post, even though I've been doing this for five years, believe it or not.

Support me if you can. If not pass on my site to a friend. I appreciate it. The link at the bottom of the page will take you directly there.

MY EBAY STORE I also sell on discogs.com under seller name ExpatMichael.
