This song to me is beyond description.  I just love it so much up and down and sideways.  10 out of 10 doesn't give it justice.  It's so cheery.  If you happen to have the original pressing on Rain records then you own a very valuable record.  I only had the pressing that got picked up by Sam records.  A favorite label of mine with many releases that I enjoyed so much in the late 70's and early 80's.  Dreamin' by Greg Henderson was one of very few releases by this artist.  I'd love to know what happened to him.

Here's a more recent edit called the ColeCo edit.  I won't comment since what can you really do with perfection?  There are also a pair of recent edits in the zip.
This gem from 1982 has not gone unrecognized.  It was featured on this fun compilation on Harmless records released in 2009, Soul Steppin'.

The follow-up also on Rain records was released in 1984.  It remains hard to find because it never got picked up by a major.  It's a bit more on the funky tip and features vocals by Rome Jeffries, Never Too Late.  Jeffries also had another hot rare release on Rain in 1983 called Good Love.

Columbus Circle If you read my mind

Paradise Garage classic If you read my Mind by Columbus Circle, was actually a one man does all act.  His name is Scott Yahney and weren't the crowds shocked when they discovered he was a white man!  Nevertheless the record went on to become a boogie favorite a nice mesh of the Synth Pop sound popular at the time mixed with the ass shakeable disco that was still proving influential and well-loved in many a club.

I am providing this post by permission of his brother the illustrious DJ Jeff Yahney.  Here he is pictured with industry legends DJ Jay Negron and Andrew Klein.

There was even a special unreleased mix done by Scott himself.  The label at the time insisted it be mixed by a famous DJ remixer and they brought in Tee Scott of Better Days and Zanzibar.  

It proved to be a Billboard Dance Chart hit shooting all the way up to #10 in 1982.

A Definitive Paradise Garage Classic

The former keyboardist for the British group Hi Tension, David Joseph is responsible for one of the definitive Paradise Garage classics.  So much so that it even defined a category Garage House.  I'd venture to say that it's 1983 release date made it more "boogie" than anything else.  Boogie was the term Brits were using in the early 80's for disco.

Though his debut single, Joseph wasn't really able to repeat the impact.  We're just lucky that it exists and that Larry Levan mixed it.  YOU CAN'T HIDE THIS ZIP

Brooklyn duo James "d train" Williams and Hubert Eaves III put out some of the best releases of the post DISCO era when in the U.K. they started to call disco "boogie."  They defined the Prelude records sound of the early 80's.

Born and nurtured in Brooklyn, New York, James "D-Train" Williams began his singing career at age 6. He sang in many church choirs and school choirs. While attending school at Erasmus High School he earned the prestigious title“D-Train” as a Defensive Tackle, football star. (”When he hits you, you felt the impact of the Train”). James’ career came into play by a chance meeting, while helping out his fellow classmate the legendary Will Downing in the studio, he met producer Hubert Eaves III and the two embarked on a musical journey of Number 1 Billboard Hits, on the dance charts.

James "D-Train" Williams gave memorable and fresh-sounding R&B/dance tracks of the early to mid-1980’s. Along with Hubert Eaves III their first single, the brilliant “You’re The One For Me,” was released on Prelude Records in 1981. The song hit number one on the dance chart in early 1982 and kept that position for three weeks. Their first album for Prelude was 1982’s entitled“You’re The One For Me.” The album stormed the club charts and produced three powerhouse 12″ singles. Besides the stunning title track it also featured “Keep On” and the much-covered “Walk On By.”  YOU"RE THE ONE FOR ME EDIT

“Music,” D-Train’s second album, followed in 1983 and was supported with another batch of singles: “Keep Giving Me Love,” “Are You Ready For Me,” and the major club smash “Music” amongst them. “Something’s On Your Mind,.” Followed by “Oh how I Love You Girl”, top 10 R’N’B hit, "Misunderstanding" (from his debut Columbia album, “Miracles of The Heart”,) “In Your Eyes”, and a host of others.

Having signed to the Epic/Prelude label, they found greater success in the UK than in their home country. They enjoyed three UK Top 30 pop hits with “You’re The One For Me” (1982), “Music, Part 1″ (1983) and “You’re The One For Me (Remix)” (1985). D-Train’s biggest US hit was the Billboard R&B Top 5 single, "Something’s On Your Mind"(1983).  But it was not one of their biggest club hits and they won't really be remembered for that one.
YOU'RE THE ONE SPECIAL DUB They put out three full albums, one in each year '83, '83 and '84.  I was in college then so I spent a lot of time dancing to "D" Train classics.

Keep On remains a classic at The Loft.  The lyrics are so inspirational and draw people to the floor as well now as they did in 1983. It was of course one of the high points at the Larry Levan tribute party this past May in New York, a street party to commemorate naming the street outside the Paradise Garage space on King St. Larry Levan Way.  FRANCOIS K REMIX OF KEEP ON

By 1985 their sound wasn't really in style anymore and the hits dried up.

Better Days star DJ Tee Scott remixed many of my favorites. But Karin Jones Under the Influence has to be right up there among my very favorites.


The 1982 12 inch disco remix on Handshake is a highly coveted slab of vinyl. But in this case the full album is even more sought out. In fact the Dunn Pearson Jr. (of classic Red Greg Groove on Down fame), arranged gem was even re-pressed in 2005 on cd. Eddie Levert of The O'Jays even provides backing vocals on one of the tracks.

Tony Valor had been around for a while. A disco luminary he was a part of Salsoul's Soccer, Brunswick's The Tony Valor Sounds Orchestra, Brunswick's Touch and Pavillion's Fantasy. Just to name a few of his contributions as either producer, arranger, or writer. His edits in this track are part of the reason why this record is the holy grail that it has become.

Test Drive was actually Joe Coleman's follow-up to Get it off The Ground on Italy f1 Records. They are both Killer Modern Soul boogie classics. Which always inspire massive bidding wars on Ebay.

They are the types of records that once you hear them for the first time you can't wait to lift the needle and put them on again.

When's your next Candlelight Afternoon?

Phyllis St. James had full control of her 1984 l.p. Ain't No Turnin' Back. A feat for a Motown artist. She wrote and arranged in collaboration on some cuts with Velton Ray Burch.

The single Candelight Afternoon got the most attention. But not very much attention, surely not as much as it deserved. Now boogie and modern soul collectors know to make a beeline for this 12" when it's offered.

This is an extended mix which is found only on the U.K. 12", not even the U.S. white label Promo has this version.
