They were huge right off the bat. Particularly in Europe. I was living in Rome in 1983 and Big in Japan and Sounds Like a Melody were massive. Melody even hit the #1 spot.
Though the members of the band changed over time. Their output was prolific, even if they were never able to capture that initial success. In the U.S. Big in Japan spent two weeks at #1 on the dance charts in 1984, their only U.S. #1. And was a #1 pop hit in Germany, Greece, Sweden, Turkey and Venezuela. They were after all considered more alternative, new wave in the U.S. and mostly got airplay on radio station like KROQ in L.A. and WLIR in Long Island.
