Who is Randy Wiper?

Who is Randy Wiper? I really don't know. Nor do I know who his producer Ruler was. But the Trash records 1984 italo disco release by Randy Wiper is called I'd Like to Know. It's one of those unknown gems on a tiny label.

INSANELY RARE VOCODER FUNK the pinch SHOT OUT

A limited edition 7" inch single on a small Texas label called Spider-Mo Records has become a highly collectible record. Shot Out by the pinch is a Electro vocoder romp.

I don't go on much about my Vocoder fascination but it is one of my passions. It's featured on lots of classic Funk, Italo and Electro records that I'm fond of.

Maybe it reminds me of Peter Frampton. I loved his talk box vocals when I was in Elementary school. But not long after my passion turned toward disco.

The 12" single is a re-press and is not collectible like the original 7" single.

HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN by HOT r.s. is a HOT disco re-make

There were tons of disco re-makes. Some were schlock and some really hit it on the nail. I guess because so much material was released in such a short period of time it was hard to constantly come up with completely new songs.

A faceless band from Johannesburg, South Africa came up with a 14 minute+ disco remake masterpiece with their cover of The Animals single from 1964 The House of The Rising Sun.

Hot R.S. and this 1977 disco 12" went on to become one of the most collectible and hard to find releases of the entire disco era.

KITSCH, CAMPY AND OH SO RIGHT FRENCH EURO ACT MAGAZINE 60

Magazine 60 are composed of Dominique Regiacourte, Jean-Luc Drion and Veronique Oliver. A French Electro NRG outfit able to sing in a few languages.

Their best known 12" was the infectious Don Quichotte. I had a really great time dancing to it. My best friend at the time was a girl from L.A. and it was one of her favorites from the underground clubs she used to frequent there. Clubs with names like Power Tool at rotating locations long before anyone was speaking about raves.

I think it was quite fun how they featured a theme, with Pancho Villa being another one of their fun Latin themed dance releases.

NARADA MICHAEL WALDEN'S BOOGIE HOLY GRAIL

Before Narada Michael Walden became the hugely successful Producer of Whitney Houston among others he was a member of the jazz group Weather Report. He also scored a disco hit with I don't Want Nobody Else in 1978.

His 1980 Promo only 12" I Want You is a boogie holy grail. It is both scarce and mighty. Not one of his best known efforts.

Better Days star DJ Tee Scott remixed many of my favorites. But Karin Jones Under the Influence has to be right up there among my very favorites.


The 1982 12 inch disco remix on Handshake is a highly coveted slab of vinyl. But in this case the full album is even more sought out. In fact the Dunn Pearson Jr. (of classic Red Greg Groove on Down fame), arranged gem was even re-pressed in 2005 on cd. Eddie Levert of The O'Jays even provides backing vocals on one of the tracks.

He was most popular during the seventies when politically conscious music was big in Italy. Hell the commies were about to take over when Aldo Moro was kidnapped and later killed by the "brigada rosso." Not the best move since this Christian Democrat politician was doing a lot to comprise with the Italian Communists, but hey this isn't a political blog now is it?







This zip contians two of his most famous songs Ancora Tu and il Veliero which I think contain more then a bit of the disco beat to them and were both released in 1976.


The other download features a recent edit of Questo Amore.

He died of cancer in 1998 and compilations of his career's work have been selling like hot cakes in Italy and around Europe ever since.

LOVE IS THE MESSAGE MFSB and VOGUING BALLS FOREVER

Nothing can really be said about this record without sounding banal. For voguers, ball children, Garageheads, Loftheads, Body and Soul fans and many d.j.'s and club punters along the way it's been an inspiration and the stimulus of much joy.

Originally a 45 rpm release in 1973 it seemed to simmer and boil throughout the years until exploding in the late 70's as an out and out disco classic. It's been re-pressed many times including in 1979 when MFSB shared the billing with The Three Degrees.

The Danny Krivit remix is the definitive one to have. Danny himself was right in the thick of it all too. He like David Mancuso came to prominence in the 70's and has continued to be active ever since. Often his projects are billed under aliases like Mr. K.

His version was included on the compilation to accompany the classic dance scene book Last Night a DJ Saved My Life which I blogged about a couple years ago here on Disco Vinyl.

LOSING GAME JO JO ZEP

The last single for Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons was a lush morning music beauty called Losing Game.

Here I provide the scarce extended remix done by Jellybean Benitez back when he was the Junior Vasquez of his day. Man his name is on tons of my records. All sorts of styles too. Jellybean as we know was also instrumental in launching Madonna and was one of her many lovers.

Aussie Joe Camillieri (Zep) also wrote and produced the song. I think one of the best parts of this song are the tasty female background vocals. I wonder who they are? They deserve some kudos.

Unfortunately the group broke up just as they were about to be launched in the American market and that's probably why this great track remains relatively obscure.

You could almost call Konk The Paradise Garage house band. They played there many times including the closing night.

They had that perfect mesh of new wave, disco, jazz and latin. So they had the power of appealing to many yet keeping their sound real street and underground.

Their biggest hit Your Life was picked up by Sleeping Bag. It was massive in New York. Here I choose to spotlight an earlier 12" Konk Party which was released on Celluloid in 1983.

Just recently the band played for the first time in more then 20 years.  It was an event to commemorate the life of DJ Mark Kamins.  He was an early champion of their work, as they often played at Danceteria as well as The Paradise Garage.

SWEET TALK ROBIN BECK 1979

I'm pretty sure this gem has been posted on a few blogs, but I just can't get enough of it. It's one of those songs I slap on when I feel a bit down and it always cheers me up. The strings are just so fluttery. It's so Chic, so orchestral so BIG and GRAND. Yet it just got lost in the shuffle. Just too much disco coming out in 1979 I guess.


Course Dimitri of Paris got his hands on it. If he hadn't then it would have been Joey Negro or any other of a large number of d.j.'s that just can't seem to let well enough alone.

Robin Beck has remained sort of an obscure figure too. She definitely serves us hot and pretty.

I haven't heard any of her other releases. There were a few too including a 12" in 2006 no less.

Is Robin Beck even in this group picture? I would guess she's old enough to be any of these girl's mom. Has anyone heard Sunblock featuring Robin Beck doing First Time from 2006? If so drop me a note and tell me about it. So did they do this photo shoot at the Playboy mansion? Where's Kendra? Where's Bridget?

This is actually a re-make of her single from 1988 which seems to have only been released in Europe. So I'd have to guess that our Robin Beck is based somewhere on my continent. So was this song a jingle for Coca-Cola or something?

Kenny Lehman who had his hands in a lot of Chic stuff and Lemon produced, conducted and arranged this disco beauty. Thomas Jones co-produced. He also was involved with Lemon and Roundtree too. So it proves that even if you have the right cooks in the kitchen you still may not be able to sell your dish at Spago.


Kudos to Robin herself for having a hand in writing this tune. For disco I'd call it a masterpiece for it's lyrics alone. Though that's not necessarily saying much, think Fly Robin Fly or Boogie Oogie Oogie.

The funny thing about this 1990 Italo Disco goes Hi NRG import on Lombardoni Publishing Recordings is the fact that they misprinted the title on the sleeve. They actually called it Let me Tall in Love on the cover.

Severo Lombardoni was the well respected boss of Disco Magic Records and appeared on some of it's releases as an artist. He produced the 1982 classic by Delanuà How Many Fill and Alan Barry's Tell me the Reason just to name a couple. He's definitely Italo Disco legendary.

Jazz-funk fans, believe the hype: James Mason's Rhythm of Life is every bit the overlooked classic its small but fanatical cult following has built it up to be. Smoothly soulful (but not slick) and spiritually uplifting throughout, the album's blend of funky fusion and progressive R&B is hardly the stuff purist dreams are made of, but anyone who loves the deep grooves of Donald Byrd or Mason's former employer, Roy Ayers, will immediately understand why this is considered a masterpiece in acid jazz circles. Breezy ballads and ferocious up-tempo groovers alike benefit from Mason's sure sense of songcraft and his knack for full-bodied arrangements. Mason plays all the guitars and loads of vintage synths (two different ARPs and Fender Rhodes electric piano among them), so he's largely responsible for the instrumental meat of every track. And though he's a strong soloist when he chooses, his focus is more on creating luxurious textures and working the grooves. And work them he does -- the faster tracks are amazingly driving for the jazz-funk genre, taken at tempos that would be fast even for R&B or rock, with lots of frantically slapped bass from Gene Torres. Clarice Taylor's vocals are far more soulful than the charmingly amateurish jazz-funk norm; what's more, the songs -- all but one co-written by Ninoska Escobar -- aren't just perfunctory groove vehicles, but feel more substantially structured than is typical for the genre. At least four -- "Sweet Power Your Embrace," "Free," "Funny Girl," and "Slick City" -- have become rare-groove club standards, and the title cut is an absolute monster. Records like Rhythm of Life -- catchy, funky, richly textured, and utterly joyous -- are a huge reason the acid jazz movement came into being; since their virtues aren't as prized by hardcore jazzers, they might otherwise be consigned to oblivion. Sweet Power your Embrace and Free were released as a double a Side single in 1977. While Sweet Power Your Embrace and Funny Girl received a limited 12" release in 1977 too.

They also pulled out I Want Your Love in 1996 but I haven't heard it so I don't know what they did to it.

Welcome to the Deep, Dark, Mysterious ITALIAN Jungle

The sole l.p. by Zebra Crossing was released in 1978 on EMI Italy. We're Going Places was a minor hit and was even included on a couple Italian K-Tel style compilations.

Let's talk outfits! Our female lead vocalist here seems prepared for her audition for XENA Warrior Princess. While her male counter-parts are trying to decide whether they are going for a futuristic space trip or perhaps an audition as extras for the next Zorro film.

The get-ups might be a bit silly but the music is truly serious, particularly Life after Life which opens Side B, from the first riffs you can tell this one's a scorcher.

Husband and wife team Mario & Giosy Capuano were active through-out the 70's previous to this. In fact their release just previous to this one was a cover of The Theme from Close Encounters of the Third Kind as Capuano. Check it out by clicking below. They also recorded as an alias as MA.GI.C with an Italo Disco single on Mr. Disc Records in 1981 called Shampoo. That too I would be eager to hear as Mr. Disc is one of my favorite Italo labels.
